Many Americans don't take the necessary steps to take care of their health, including getting appropriate preventative screenings.
Cost may be one reason why too many go without this care, but new government rules aim to make it easier for people to gain access to services they need. Effective for new plans commencing on or after September 23 of this year, health insurance companies will be required to cover costs associated with preventative services that have been proven to have health benefits. Receiving regular screenings can help patients delay and even avoid the onset of many costly conditions. "Getting access to early care and screenings will go a long way in preventing chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure," says First Lady Michelle Obama. The American Diabetes Association says that 7.8 percent of people in the country had diabetes in 2007. If people are aware that they are at a high risk of developing the disease, patients can take appropriate actions to get their health in order. This knowledge could greatly reduce health care and health insurance costs.
